LaRoche, known throughout his career as a sure-handed first baseman, had never received the annual award. He becomes just the second Nationals player ever to be honored with one — and the first since third baseman Ryan Zimmerman brought home the organization's first in 2009. Senators catcher Earl Battey earned the first of his three career Gold Gloves in 1960, his lone season in Washington... read more

Nationals even series at 2 on Jayson Werth's walk-off HR Associated Press

WASHINGTON -- The Washington Nationals signed Jayson Werth to show them how to win. His game-ending homer Thursday night extended their surprising season.

Werth led off the bottom of the ninth inning by driving Lance Lynn's 13th pitch into the left-field stands to give the Nationals a 2-1 victory over the defending World Series champion St. Louis Cardinals and force a Game 5 in their NL division series.

As he circled the bases, Werth raised his right index finger in a "No... read more

Chris Carpenter pitches Cardinals to 2-1 lead over Nationals

WASHINGTON -- Set aside the high-pressure task of postseason pitching that Chris Carpenterroutinely masters for the St. Louis Cardinals and think about this:

Even the take-it-for-granted act of breathing feels odd on occasion now that he's missing a rib and two neck muscles.

Taking the mound for only the fourth time in 2012 after complicated surgery to cure numbness on his right side, the 37-year-old Carpenter spoiled the return of postseason baseball to Washington by throwing scoreless ball into the sixth inning, and the defending champion Cardinals beat the Nationals 8-0 Wednesday to take a 2-1 lead in their NL division series... read more

The exhilaration of the Washington Nationals’ first division crown still coursed through the air at Nationals Park on Tuesday night. The clubhouse had a faint day-after smell ofchampagne, beer and carpet cleaner. Fans cheered at the introduction of their “National League East champion Washington Nationals.” The team’s playoff future was nearly set.

tephen Strasburg strikes out 10 as Nats take 7-game lead over Braves

WASHINGTON -- Because the Washington Nationals have an innings limit for star right-hander Stephen Strasburg, there aren't many starts left in his remarkable season.

On Tuesday night, Strasburg ignored that talk and weathered his first major league rain delay, striking out 10 and allowing one run in six innings for his 15th win as the Nationals beat the Atlanta Braves 4-1.

For weeks, the impending shutdown of Strasburg (15-5) has been the talk of baseball and though the Nationals haven't said exactly what their limit is, it's thought to be between 160 and 180 innings. After this start, his fourth straight win, when he allowed four hits and walked one, he has thrown 145 1/3 innings... read more

Nationals look to keep rolling along in Toronto

By Andrew Simon / MLB.com

The Nationals sit atop the National League East, but will face a difficult task on Monday night, when they open a three-game Interleague series against the Blue Jays at Rogers Centre.

Brandon Morrow takes the mound for Toronto, and scoring runs against the 27-year-old right-hander has proven problematic. He leads the Major Leagues with three shutouts, including a two-hitter on Wednesday against the White Sox.

Morrow almost completely ditched his changeup and curveball against Chicago, to great effect.

"It was all fastball-slider," he said afterward... read more

Jackson, LaRoche leads Nats past Mets

By Bill Ladson / MLB.com

WASHINGTON -- Adam LaRoche drove in four runs and Edwin Jackson tossed seven innings to help the Nationals defeat the Mets, 5-3, at Nationals Park on Wednesday night.

Prior to the game, LaRoche was in a serious slump. He saw his batting average go from .339 on May 16 to .267. He also was hitless in 13 at-bats during the current homestand, but he made up for it in one game. He gave Washington the lead in the first inning by hitting a three-run homer on the first pitch -- a curveball -- he saw from Mets right-hander Jeremy Hefner.

WASHINGTON -- The Mets made one thing clear to the Nationals on Tuesday night: They are going to be tough to deal with in the National League East. But Washington prevailed, 7-6, on a walk-off single by Bryce Harper in the 12th inning at Nationals Park.

"Wild game. It wasn't a very well-played game, but it was nice to come out on top," manager Davey Johnson said.

Marlins turn to JJ to finish off Wang, Nationals

By Jon Star / MLB.com

The Nationals dropped the first two games of the three-game set in Miami, and salvaging the finale of their nine-game road trip comes with a stiff test in the form of Marlins starter Josh Johnson.

Johnson takes the ball not only looking to push Miami to a sweep and move within one-half game of Washington in the National League East standings, but to also extend his undefeated record against the Nats. The right-hander owns a 7-0 record and 3.22 ERA in 14 career starts vs. the Nationals, and Miami in 10-4 in those outings.

Johnson doesn't shy away from that mark nor the importance of his role in taking on the division-leading rivals in front of the home crowd... read more

Anibal tries to keep spotless record vs. Nats intact

The Marlins will look for their league-high 20th win in the month of May on Tuesday, and they'll turn to perhaps their steadiest starter to do so.

Sanchez -- who owns a 7-0 record and 2.10 ERA in 111 2/3 innings against Washington -- will look to move past his last appearance, a forgettable outing amid a season filled with quality starts. As long as Adam Jones keeps swinging for the fences, the Baltimore Orioles have to feel good about their chances of staying atop the American League East. And if Jones can homer on Friday against the Nationals, there's no reason why Baltimore shouldn't be optimistic as it opens Interleague Play against its geographical rival.

A Boy Named Komatsu

Ante up, folks; you’re now in The Card Room w/KMFP.

Recent news out of camp is that Skip Schumaker’s oblique problems have taken a turn for the worse.  It’s officially a muscle tear, meaning he won’t be adjusting his batting gloves 13-times between EVERY pitch for quite a while.  I’ve always found Skip to be more of a clubhouse guy than a huge asset on the field anyway, especially at second, but I do root for his recovery.  As an outfielder off of the bench to spell the starters or provide late inning defense and occasional pinch-hitting, as I was hoping it would shape out this season, I think his value increases greatly... read more
