Recap: LA Lakers vs. Houston

By Sports Network Mike D'Antoni's head coaching debut will have to wait again.

Once again, though, his Lakers had no trouble putting the ball in the basket.

Kobe Bryant's triple-double and Dwight Howard's 28-point, 13-rebound effort lifted Los Angeles to a 119-108 victory over the Houston Rockets.

D'Antoni was set to debut Sunday night, but decided hours before the game that he was not quite ready to return yet. He has been on crutches as he recovers from knee replacement surgery earlier this month.

Bryant tallied 22 points, 11 rebounds and 11 assists in the victory for Los Angeles, which recorded a season-high in points... read more

L.A. has started off the year at 0-2, losing to both the Dallas Mavericks and Portland Trail Blazers. Neither game was close, as the Lakers lost by a total of 18 points.

Los Angeles entered the season with extremely high expectations. They traded for Dwight Howard and Steve Nash, with the hopes of winning their first title since 2010. Through two games, the Lakers haven’t looked like a championship-caliber club, and there have been calls to fire head coach Mike Brown.

While L.A. has struggled to start the season, the Lakers should be fine... read more

Lakers blackout in L.A. is stupid brinksmanship

The Los Angeles Lakers played the Portland Trailblazers on Halloween night but the majority of L.A.fans were unable watch it.

The Time Warner Cable SportsNet channel has yet to settle on a business arrangement with the biggest television content providers in the City of Angels.

Isn't it time for DirecTV, Cox Cable and Dish Network to stop the negotiating and take a deal that was fine and dandy for competitors AT&T U-verse, Verizon FIOS and Charter Communications?

TWC threw down the gauntlet after getting those providers to sign on the dotted line:

"If Cox or DIRECTV choose not to carry our networks, we and their customers will be very disappointed but we are confident there will be other alternatives for their customers to see this highly-anticipated Lakers season,"

While consumers have become accustomed to hearing of wars between their provider and those that produce and license the shows we all love, the fact that one game was missed in the 82-game NBA season shocked even the most calm of customers... read more

Kobe Bryant (foot) could miss opener

By Dave McMenamin

EL SEGUNDO, Calif. -- The prevailing thought during the offseason was that Dwight Howard could be the missing puzzle piece when the curtain came up on the new-look Los Angeles Lakers'2012-13 season.

It turns out that Kobe Bryant, not Howard, could be the one who starts out the season sidelined.

Bryant sat out Sunday's practice, using the time to receive treatment on the strained right foot he hurt a full week ago during the team's exhibition game against the Sacramento Kings.

With the Lakers' season opener just two days away against the Dallas Mavericks at Staples Center, Bryant remains out indefinitely according to the team and his availability for Tuesday has started to be called into question by his teammates... read more

Five suggestions for keeping the Lakers fresh and healthy

By Mark Medina

Should the Lakers win it all, credit their experience. Should they fall short, blame it on old age.

They rank along with the Miami Heat and Oklahoma City Thunder as the three legitimate NBA title favorites for reasons that seem pretty obvious. L.A. boasts four future Hall of Famers in their starting lineup that features players at the top of their field in scoring (Kobe Bryant), passing (Steve Nash), post play (Dwight Howard, Pau Gasol) and defense (Metta World Peace)... read more

Bynum Excels

Something just doesn't sit right when considering the concept.

Then again, Charlize Theron convincingly playing an unattractive woman in "Monster" didn't seem to make a lot of sense on paper until you actually saw the movie.

Metta World Peace injured

Metta World Peace has an apparent ankle injury By Mark Medina

April 5, 2012, 8:30 a.m.

Just when it appeared the Clippers would dash the Lakers' hopes in securing third place in the Pacific Division, the purple & gold leaned on last hope.

That came in the form of World Peace.

Lakers Coach Mike Brown matched up the Lakers' defender with Clippers guard Chris Paul, hoping "to get some length on him to make him shoot over our hand." He did so despite World Peace nursing an unspecified ankle injury he says happened sometime in the Lakers' loss last week to Oklahoma City... read more

Call it the 'Lin Effect': Lakers need an elite point guard

Published Feb. 21, 2012

If you put a stud at point guard in a major NBA market, the fans throw all their support behind that player, and teammates buy into the system. Just look at New York and Chicago. Call it the Jeremy Lin Effect.

It is a lesson that Los Angeles Lakers management should take with them as the trade deadline looms less than a month away.

In 2004, the NBA implemented new rules to curtail hand-checking. Consequently, team success in professional basketball became geared toward the triumph or failure of point guards... read more
