California teen Marti Sementelli thought she was walking into a scene of a new movie on that 2008 summer day. But the lights weren’t for cameras and the 100 or so girls were not actresses. “They were all just like me,” Sementelli said. “I was like, ‘Woah!’ I was shell-shocked because I had so much in common with them... read more

Female Baseball Pioneer to Hold Clinic For Girls

Baseball isn’t just for the boys. On Sunday, July 24 the St. Paul Saints will make sure that girls rule on a rockin’ day as they welcome 11-year old Peyton Schuldt, who is batting Ewing’s Sarcoma and has her own website documenting her fight called Peytonrocks. Also, the first female to coach a men’s professional baseball team, former Brockton Rox coach, Justine Siegal will pitch batting practice and hold a special clinic for girls.

The story of 11-year-old Peyton is a touching one and her love for baseball is what prompted the Saints to invite her out to the ballpark on this special day... read more

Baseball Isn’t Just for Boys Anymore

Baseball camp is about baseball, of course, which means every camper gets a turn in the batting cage, and they all get advice.

When I visited the campers enrolled in a program called Baseball For All at Dan Duquette’s Baseball Academy in western Massachusetts on Tuesday, the hitter receiving the instruction was a 13-year-old named Jackie, who’d come to the camp from Toronto. Her batting coach was Michaela Sihler, a former Little League All-Star who pitches for her high school team in Florida.

“Keep your weight back,” Sihler was saying. “The curve balls are going to be coming at you, not tailing away... read more

Standout San Antonio Dixie Youth League hitter headed for Cooperstown

SAN ANTONIO — Lyndsey Calton wasn't exactly looking for a spot on a girls' team.

The 13-year-old standout in the San Antonio Dixie Youth League likes the pace of baseball and the competition she's found in the boys' league. Then she found out about an elite national all-girls baseball team for players like her — and she earned a coveted spot.

Calton will suit up next month with the Sparks, which will compete against boys travel teams in Cooperstown, N.Y., from Aug. 12-19.

"I'm really looking forward to the opportunity," said Calton, who attends Pasco Middle School... read more

Knuckleball May Be Ticket to the Major Leagues for Yoshida

The knuckleball has a secure place in the history of Major League Baseball.  Hall of Famers Hoyt Wilhelm and Phi Niekro played long careers on the strength of sidearm and curving knuckleballs, which confuse opponents not with speed, but with direction and timing.

At Maui's Na Koa Ikaika  ("strong warriors") of the North American Baseball League  (NABL), independent minor league baseball players have faced the first women to play minor league baseball in nearly 15 years.

Eri Yoshida is the 19 year old whose wild ride in the independent leagues started at age 16, when she was drafted by Japan's independent league Kobe 9 Cruisers... read more
